There are two types of Sperm donor:

• Anonymous-Unknown sperm donor or
• Known sperm donor

Anonymous donors are screened by donor Sperm program.

Exceptional Donor:

• Donor with Unique achievements or skills
• Person with celebrity status
• Scientist, professional and administration with higher designation.
• Male having very attractive looks and body constitution.
• Famous sportsmen, T.V. / Film actors etc.

A known donor is someone you know, who is willing to donate Sperm for you.. A couple can get a sperm donor from her own family or friend.

• Couple knows the genetic source and hence is happy about the genetic source.
• If a couple gets a donor from its own family e.g. brother, it may give them an opportunity to have very close (almost similar) genetic source.
• Couple does not have to pay any financial compensation.

• There may remain emotional bond between the sperm donor and the child born, because the sperm donor and the child born are known to each other.
• There may be a sense of obligation in the minds of recipient, for the donor, which cannot be compensated by any means.
• Generally the known donor is married and hence his wife and the big family may not accept the process easily and may cause short term or long term social problems.
• As per ICMR guidelines sperm donation from a known source donor may not be allowed in future.

Hence selection of a known donor has both advantages and disadvantages. The couple has to take a decision after a thoughtful consideration of all above mentioned facts, and choose an appropriate option for them.
