Sperm/Semen freezing is a very well established and proven technique since many years, Specially designed cryoprotectants are used to safeguard sperm against adverse effect of freezing on it. Solutions containing cryoprotectant are called media, we at BFI use the best quality well established cryoprotectant and media for sperm/semen freezing which gives us very good quality of sperm/semen after thawing-warming (actual time of use).

Sperm/semen freezing is done by a team of experienced embryologist and lab technician. Sperm/semen collection is done in a sterile container in a usual manner. The container is immediately labeled with identifying information like name, case ID no.

Once the sperm/semen sample is examined and found suitable for freezing following possibilities are discussed with couples:

• Number of vials to be frozen
• Time duration for which freezing is requested (minimum of 6 month and multiple their of)

Report of freezing is given to the couple mentioning all the relevant details. Expiry date for stored sperm/semen is also given, so that the couple can extend the storage duration before the expiry. The male partner does not have to stay till the end of the procedure. Male partner can leave the hospital immediately after sperm/semen collection, preferably after the primary evaluation of sperm/semen and discussion about the number of vials and storage duration.

Based on the overall quality and number of motile sperm present, the sperm/semen sample is then mixed with specific volumes of media and preservant and divided into a calculated number of vials. The sperms are stored in small vials or straws of holding between 0.5 – 1.0 ml. These vials are then slowly cooled down to extremely low temperatures and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks. .
